Vuo, a environment for designing live interactive media, reached another milestone with Kosada’s release of beta version 0.9.

With Vuo, users can easily create multimedia effects by dragging, dropping, and connecting Vuo's building blocks to produce graphics, animations, sounds, apps, UI prototypes, and more. Vuo, a visual programming environment, is being designed as a robust alternative to Apple’s Quartz Composer. Vuo runs on Apple's Mac OS X operating system.

This release features live video input via QuickTime, including the built-in iSight camera on MacBooks and iMacs, expanding on Vuo’s audio and video capabilities, as well as many new building blocks for manipulating images, 3D objects, and improving logic flows. Vuo has been used at live performances, including the electro-music 2014 festival this summer in Huguenot, New York, USA. Members of Team Vuo volunteered to VJ for several performances, and using Vuo, along with a fader controller and audio input, they projected visuals to add an extra dimension to the musicians' performances.

Melissa Egan, who participated in using Vuo at electro-music remarked, "I was surprised by how easy it was to quickly create and adapt visuals to complement the music we were hearing. We worked on some new features for Vuo 0.9 that I think have led to a breakthrough in what can be accomplished using Vuo. First, a new family of random number generator nodes makes it easy to create art that takes on a life of its own. Second, the new collection of nodes for the BCF2000 controller allows you to manipulate the parameters of your composition using the convenient interface of a hardware fader controller. This makes it easy to adapt to changes in the environment, like mood changes in the music. The combined ability to create living art and to easily harness and guide that art opens up a whole new realm of possibilities! I'm excited to imagine what I might get to use Vuo for next."

Kosada has long been a supporter of the multimedia community though hosting Kineme, a site for Quartz Composer users, and through developing Quartz Composer plug-ins. Kosada is preparing to release Vuo version 1.0 later this year.
